48-year-old man accused of attempted murder; police say the woman they shot had a knife and moved toward officers
A man is under arrest facing charges including two counts of attempted murder after an officer-involved shooting in Jamaica, Queens.
The New York City Police Dept. said Saturday night that Rashawn Donovan, 48, was taken into custody. He lives at the house where new claims are emerging about a confrontation between police a woman shot by officers.
Relatives and two men who were stabbed said the woman who police shot was the person who called 911. The NYPD said officers shot her as she held a knife and moved in their direction inside a home in Jamaica.
The incident left three men stabbed and the woman hospitalized.
"I’m like 'what are you doing? Why did you shoot her? She was the one that called y’all!," said Edward Grant, one of two men stabbed in what he called an incident of domestic violence involving a family member experiencing a mental health episode.
Grant showed NBC New York five stitches on his arm, where he said he was stabbed Friday evening by his girlfriend’s brother inside their family home on 149th Street.
The suspect's nephew, who identified himself as "Koran," said he was the first to be stabbed by his uncle, who he believed was in the throes of a mental health episode.
"We do love him, but he has to go seek professional help for these outbursts," Koran said. Police did not say on Saturday whether Donovan is the uncle relatives were talking about.
Grant said his girlfriend, Nikki, the sister of the suspect, called 911 after the stabbing. Family members tried to barricade themselves in the attic, he said.
"He’s trying to say 'come downstairs, come downstairs!' With two knives in his hand, I’m like 'I’m not going downstairs -- you just stabbed Koran," Grant explained.
Just before 9:45 p.m., police officers were at the family’s door, but no one dared to leave the attic and open the door to let officers in, according to the account given to NBC New York Saturday.
"A female appeared at the third floor window on the side of the house and said that she couldn’t come downstairs and threw a set of keys out the window," NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera told reporters during a news conference.
Grant said the suspect then broke into their room and attacked everyone. "We (were) tussling, we had him on the floor, me and my girl, she took one of the knives out of his hand."
Police used the woman’s keys to enter the home and reach the attic, where they told everyone to raise their hands, according to the NYPD's Rivera.
"The female pointed with her left hand at one of the males across the room but did not raise her right hand, Rivera said. "The officers continued to issue the same verbal commands, the female still did not comply and moved in the direction of the officers with a knife in her hand."
