An inter-agency task force of federal, state, and local law enforcement officials conducted multiple raids across several boroughs on Tuesday as part of an ongoing, massive Medicaid fraud investigation.
According to law enforcement sources, Homeland Security Investigations, the New York State Office of the Medicaid Inspector General, Internal Revenue Service, and the NYPD raided adult day care services across Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Queens.
“I want to acknowledge another massive effort to combat fraud and abuse, this time in the Medicaid program. This morning, the New York State Department of Health and the Office of Medicaid Inspector General joined state and federal law enforcement agencies in a coordinated crackdown of suspected fraud and social adult day care programs. This is an active investigation, so there are limits to what I can share today,” Hochul said during an unrelated press conference on Oct. 20.
“I can tell you this has been a months-long investigation in close partnership with the federal government," the government added. amNewYork was on the scene in Flushing Tuesday afternoon at Hanmaum Daycare located at 32-38 148th St., which advertises itself as providing social adult day care services designed primarily for Korean-American and Asian-American seniors.
At around 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 20, federal agents were spotted removing some six boxes filled with materials, two computers and one large plastic container. The feds bundled the items into unmarked vehicles. Agents did not comment on the matter at the scene.
Hochul said the raid intends to stop "providers we believe in who engaged in illegal activity, ranging from money laundering to kickbacks to improper billing and other fraudulent activities."
"My administration has spent years strengthening oversight of the program and safeguarding taxpayer dollars, resulting in over 100 referrals by my administration to the Attorney General for investigation and prosecution by cracking down on fraud and abuse. Overall, we've saved over $15 billion in Medicaid money since 2021, but our work is far from finished,” Hochul added. “Let me be clear. New York has zero tolerance.”
NYPD sources stated that they participated in the investigation and that it was not immigration-related, but they would not go into further detail. Meanwhile, Homeland Security Investigations New York released a general statement on X about the raids. “Health care fraud is not victimless. It drains public resources, weakens trust in vital programs, and deprives communities, families, and caregivers of needed support. Every day, @HSI_HQ is working to expose fraud, protect taxpayers, and assist victims,” the statement read.
