Mamdani refuses to say whether he'll boost cops in subways after man shot dead on Midtown platform

Mayor Mamdani gave a typical word salad response Monday to questions about whether he’ll up NYPD presence on subways in the wake of a Bronx man’s killing Saturday on a Midtown platform.

New York City’s on the right track, Hizzoner says!

Mayor Zohran Mamdani wouldn’t say whether he’d boost police presence on the subways Monday after the midday murder of a security guard shot on a Midtown train platform while on his way to work.

The mayor offered up a word salad when pressed on whether he’d order a flood of cops underground to make straphangers feel safe after the brazen act of violence Saturday — and the shooter still in the wind.

“I have full confidence in our PD in their work to apprehend the suspect, and I am confident in the approach that they are taking at this time,” the democratic socialist lawmaker told reporters at an unrelated press conference in The Bronx.

Mamdani offered his condolences to the family of 26-year-old Darrel Rodriguez, who was shot in the chest just before 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the 53rd Street/7th Avenue subway station by a masked man, who has yet to be arrested.

“I am heartbroken and outraged by this shooting,” Mamdani said — without answering a reporter’s question about what the city’s plan was in the aftermath of the shocking incident.

“Every single New Yorker deserves to be safe on every single train, on every single subway platform, no matter where they're going across our five boroughs, and we know that we've made strides in making our subway safer, and we also know that this shooting serves as an incredibly painful reminder of all that still has to be done to root out the scourge of gun violence from across our city,” he said.

“And at this time, you know, my heart goes out to the family of the individual who was killed, to the loved ones of the individual who was killed.”

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
