Mamdani says he has 'no plans' to fire NYPD Commissioner Tisch despite pressure from socialist allies

Mayor Mamdani says he won't fire NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch despite growing pressure from socialist allies over the Marble Hill ICE shooting protests.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Tuesday he has "no plans" to fire NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, reaffirming his support for the city's top cop amid mounting pressure from his democratic socialist allies to remove her over the department's handling of protests following last week's ICE shooting in Marble Hill.

"Jessica Tisch is the police commissioner. I have no plans to change that," Mamdani told reporters Tuesday morning , shortly before joining Tisch at a ceremony in Battery Park City honoring 42 fallen NYPD members.

The mayor defended his decision to retain Tisch, pointing to her record of tackling corruption within the department and declining crime numbers during their time working together. "The reason that I made the decision to have Jessica Tisch as the police commissioner was because of her record of uprooting corruption from the upper echelons of the NYPD, while lowering crime across our city," Mamdani said.

In its Oct. 9 statement , NYC-DSA accused the NYPD of clearing the way for ICE agents as demonstrators gathered in solidarity with the wounded man, identified as Oscar Bergal, who was shot while his 5-year-old son was inside his vehicle.

The organization also alleged that NYPD officers mistreated protesters, including Democratic socialist congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, who it said was shoved to the ground. Chevalier, who is running in New York's 13th Congressional District with Mamdani's endorsement, also called for Tisch's removal, accusing the commissioner of attempting to justify the shooting by discussing Bergal's criminal history at a news conference.

NYC-DSA similarly took aim at Tisch over her remarks about Bergal's criminal history , accusing her of legitimizing the actions of federal agents.

"Instead of justifying ICE terrorism, Tisch must end NYPD complicity with ICE and ensure that the NYPD is not used as a weapon against New Yorkers exercising their right to free speech or as a shield for ICE's unchecked violence," the organization said.

"If the Commissioner cannot put a stop to these injustices, she must be fired," the statement continued. The calls have also spread to socialist state lawmakers and Democratic nominees, 17 of whom signed a separate statement demanding that Tisch end NYPD assistance to ICE operations and disband the department's Strategic Response Group or face dismissal.

"Jessica Tisch must end police assistance for ICE operations and disband NYPD's Strategic Response Group—and if she won't, she must be fired," the group said. The signatories included state Sens. Julia Salazar, Jabari Brisport and Kristen Gonzalez, along with Assembly Members Diana Moreno, Claire Valdez, Emily Gallagher, Marcela Mitaynes, Phara Souffrant Forrest and Sarahana Shrestha.

Eight Democratic nominees, including Mamdani-backed Assembly candidate Illapa Sairitupac, also signed the statement, which accused NYPD officers of assaulting protesters while helping federal agents following the Marble Hill shooting.

The group additionally urged the City Council to pass the CURB Act , legislation aimed at restricting the NYPD's use of certain protest-policing tactics.

The criticism has highlighted tensions between Mamdani and members of the DSA movement that helped elect him, particularly over his decision to retain Tisch as head of the nation's largest police department.

The NYPD, meanwhile, defended Tisch's decision to disclose the shooting victim's criminal history, describing it as standard practice rather than an attempt to justify the federal agents' actions.

"The Police Commissioner was giving a factual update on the incident and we always provide criminal history in incident updates if we have it," an NYPD spokesperson said. "It's also one of the first questions that every media outlet asks the NYPD."

Mamdani has himself sharply criticized the federal immigration operation, calling for ICE to be abolished, while also raising concerns about the NYPD's handling of the protests.
